Discover the World Travel Program
At Tamworth Learning Circles School

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.”

St. Augustine

True learning and the development of knowledge has its roots grounded in experience. What we encounter firsthand is taken in as nourishment, and allows us to intellectually develop and become more socially tolerant and understanding citizens.

Few experiences open us to our possibilities more than travel.

At Tamworth Learning Circles School we know how travel experience enriches lives. Our staff has led people on learning adventures for many years in Costa Rica, throughout Europe and across the United States and Canada. Our travel courses offer students hands-on opportunities to explore the cultural and natural history of a region.

Our programs are specifically designed to expose students to experiences that promote independence and accept responsibility as they engage in intellectual activities in a socially stimulating environment. Our trips are affordable, safe, and fun.

We invite you to read on for more about our programs, contact us for further information, and join us on a wonderful learning adventure where life-long memories and friendships are made.

HOW OUR PROGRAM WORKS

OUR DESTINATIONS

We offer travel opportunities to the following locations:

Acadia National Park in Maine

Cape Cod: Where the Sands Meet the Sea

The White Mountains in New Hampshire

The Black Hills of South Dakota

Southeastern Arizona

Monteverde, Costa Rica

Tuscany and Umbria, Italy

In 2009, we will be travelling to Acadia, Cape Cod, and the Black Hills.

ACTIVITIES BEFORE THE TRIP

In preparation for their travels, participants attend two days of seminars. During this time participants attend classes and discussion groups that focus on the following:

  • a general history of the region we are to visit;

  • specific historical events particular to the region;

  • a general natural history of the region;

  • specific aspects of the natural history of the region, including indigenous species, specific geological and ecological features;

  • develop a plan of study (see below) that will be followed during our visit to the area.

PLAN OF STUDY

Our two days of study prior to our journey gives participants the opportunity to become acquainted with the options available to them for hands-on experience while on the trip. Time is set aside during the two day study period to discuss a study topic for the trip. A specific study topic is identified, and a plan for research is clearly defined. Participants perform specific research on study topic prior to trip in order to prepare them for all opportunities that may present themselves during the trip. This also helps trip organizers to manipulate itinerary so each student has some time exploring first hand the study topic of choice.

ACTIVITIES DURING THE TRIP

There are a variety of activities that participants are able to participate in during the trip, as well as some personal time set aside for their enjoyment and socializing opportunities. Our hope and goal is that long-standing respectful friendships develop between participants. In addition, participants are responsible for assisting in making sure that the camp/lodging site runs efficiently. This includes the regular cleaning of the area, assistance in meal preparation and clean-up afterwards. And, of course, there are a variety of activities offered each day to obtain the goals set forth by each students study plan.

  • We visit local museums of natural and cultural history.

  • We visit local sites that were important in local historical events.

  • We hike local trails as a way to access examples of the local ecology.

  • When applicable, we meet local people who play important roles in maintaining historical and ecological value of the region.

  • Students wishing to engage in field study will have time to conduct field research.
  • Photography is an integral part of travel for many people, and a valuable tool to document aspects of research. Participants will be responsible for documenting their research project through photography or other effective means.

POST TRIP ACTIVITIES

Upon our return, participants will be charged with developing their final presentation of their final project. Parameters of the project will be clarified.

  • A day will be spent together working on the format and content of each presentation. Various presentation techniques will be explored and the most proper format for the topic chosen will be decided upon. Assistance in presentation design is a key component to this phase of the program.

  • A final day is scheduled where participants will attend a pot-luck meal and presentation day. This day will be when each participant will present the final project. This will be a fun, relaxed and informative day when we share our knowledge and experiences as we reminisce about our great travel experience.
